Being saved

How can I be sure I'm saved?

Short answer

Your certainty rests on what Jesus did and what God has promised, not on how you feel today.

If your salvation depended on how close to God you felt, you could never be sure. John wrote so that you may know you have eternal life. Know, not hope.

Look first at Jesus. Have you trusted Him? Then His promise stands: the one who comes to me I will never drive away. Your grip on Him may be weak. His isn't.

Then look for signs that the Spirit is at work: a new desire to please God, sorrow when you sin, love for other Christians, a new fight against sin. These are often small at first. Small is still real. Peter tells believers to add virtue, self-control and love to their faith, and to “strive to make your calling and election sure” (2 Peter 1:10).

If doubt keeps returning, talk to a pastor or mature Christian. When it hits, pray: Lord, I trust You. Hold on to me.

My verses

And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never drive away.

My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand.

The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
