Bible verses for doubt
When faith feels thin
The lie
If I feel unsure, it can't be true.
The truth
Your faith is only as strong as the One it rests on, and He is not shaken. Jesus didn't send Thomas away. He showed him His hands.
More truth
- Doubt is not the opposite of faith. Walking away is.
- Feelings rise and fall. The empty tomb doesn't move.
- Weak faith in a strong Saviour still holds.
Pause
Stop. Doubt is not a dead end. Breathe, and bring the question to Jesus instead of away from Him.
My verses
Immediately the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe; help my unbelief!”
So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?” Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”
Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas and then to the Twelve. After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.
If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.
Whom have I in heaven but You? And on earth I desire no one besides You. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!
Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
“If You can?” echoed Jesus. “All things are possible to him who believes!” Immediately the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe; help my unbelief!”
And indeed, have mercy on those who doubt.
Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see.
Consequently, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.
My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand.
Pray
Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief. My faith feels thin right now and I don't have all the answers. But I don't know where else I'd go. Meet me in my questions and show me again who You are. Amen.
Your way out
- Write the exact question down. A clear question is lighter than vague doubt.
- List three times God has been faithful to you.
- Read Luke 24 slowly.
- Ask a mature believer your question this week.
- Keep showing up: pray, read, go to church, even when it feels dry.
Don't carry it alone
Doubt grows in isolation. Bring it into the light with someone you trust.
And indeed, have mercy on those who doubt.
