Sin

In plain words

Anything we think, say or do that goes against God and His good way, and it separates us from Him.

Sin is not only about breaking rules. It is turning away from God and living as if we are the centre. It shows in lies, cruelty, greed and pride, but also in good things done only for ourselves. Picture a phone cut off from its charger. It may still work for a while, but it is losing what it needs to live. The Bible says everyone has sinned (Romans 3:23).

Go further Growing

Jesus said sin starts in the heart, not only in actions (Mark 7:21-23). If we say we have no sin, we fool ourselves. If we confess it, God is faithful and forgives (1 John 1:8-9). Two mistakes are common: thinking sin is no big deal, or thinking yours is too big for God. The wage of sin is death, but God's gift is eternal life in Jesus (Romans 6:23).

Go deeper Going deeper

Hebrew chatta't and Greek hamartia both carry the picture of missing the mark. The Bible also uses words for rebellion, twisting and lawlessness. From Genesis 3 onward, sin spreads through every human and every relationship, and only Christ breaks its power. Christians differ on exactly how Adam's sin is passed on to us and how far it affects the will, but all agree that everyone needs God's grace.

My verses

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

For from within the hearts of men come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness. All these evils come from within, and these are what defile a man.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
