Bible

In plain words

A collection of 66 books that Christians trust as God speaking to people through human writers.

The Bible is not one book but a library: history, poems, letters, laws, songs and eyewitness accounts, written by about forty people over more than a thousand years. Yet it tells one story, from creation, through things going wrong, to God rescuing people through Jesus. Think of it like a lamp on a dark path (Psalm 119:105). It does not show you everything at once, but enough for your next step.

Paul writes that all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, correcting and training (2 Timothy 3:16-17). That means you do not just read it for information. It reads you, too (Hebrews 4:12). A common mistake is to pull single verses out of their setting. Read whole passages, ask what it meant for the first readers, and look for how it points to Jesus (Luke 24:27).

The word comes from the Greek biblia, books. The Old Testament was mostly written in Hebrew with some Aramaic, the New Testament in Greek. Peter says the writers spoke from God as they were carried along by the Spirit (2 Peter 1:21), which is the root of the idea of inspiration. Christians differ on whether the extra books in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles belong to Scripture, and on some details of how inspiration works.

My verses

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was written in all the Scriptures about Himself.
