Gospel

In plain words

The good news that Jesus died for our sins and rose again, so anyone can be made right with God.

Gospel simply means good news. It is not advice about how to be a better person. It is news about something that already happened: Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Advice says: here is what you must do. News says: here is what has been done for you. Your part is to believe it and turn to Him.

Jesus summed it up like this: the time has come, God's kingdom is near, turn around and believe the good news (Mark 1:15). Paul calls it God's power to save everyone who believes (Romans 1:16). Many Christians think the gospel is only for the start. It is for every day. You keep coming back to it when you fail, when you doubt, and when you need a reason to love others.

The Greek euangelion was used for announcements of a victory or a new king. The Old Testament prophets already spoke of a messenger bringing good news of God's reign. The four books about Jesus are called Gospels because they tell this news. Christians agree that salvation is a gift received by faith, while they differ in how they explain the role of the church and the sacraments in receiving it.

My verses

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.

“The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!”

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, then to the Greek.

For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.
