Law and gospel

In plain words

God's law shows what is right and where we fall short. The gospel shows what Jesus did for us.

The Bible speaks to us in two ways. The law tells you what God wants: love God, love people, do not lie, steal or cheat. It is good, but it cannot make you good. It shows where you fall short. The gospel is the good news that Jesus kept the law perfectly and died for your failures, so you are accepted by grace.

Paul says no one is made right with God by keeping the law, because through the law we become aware of sin, but a righteousness from God has come through faith in Jesus (Romans 3:20-22). The law was like a guardian leading us to Christ (Galatians 3:24). Two errors are common: thinking you earn God's love by rules, or thinking rules no longer matter. Jesus came to fulfil the law, not abolish it (Matthew 5:17).

In daily life this means you hear both. When you are proud or careless, let the law humble you. When you are crushed by guilt, run to the gospel. Then, filled with the Spirit, you start to love what the law describes (Romans 8:3-4).

The Hebrew torah means instruction, not only rules. Israel received it after being rescued from Egypt, so grace came first. The Greek nomos can mean the Mosaic law, God's moral will, or a principle. The gospel, euangelion, is the announcement of what God has done in Christ. The New Testament says love fulfils the whole law (Galatians 5:14).

Lutherans stress a sharp distinction: the law accuses and the gospel comforts. Reformed Christians add that the law, fulfilled in Christ, is also a guide for grateful living. Other traditions frame it through covenant or through the newer perspective on Paul. Christians differ in how they divide the law's parts and uses, but all agree we are saved by grace through faith, not by works of the law.

My verses

Therefore no one will be justified in His sight by works of the law. For the law merely brings awareness of sin. But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, as attested by the Law and the Prophets. And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction.

So the law became our guardian to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

The entire law is fulfilled in a single decree: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
