Suffering, doubt and mental health
I don't feel anything when I pray or worship. What's wrong with me?
Short answer
Probably nothing. Feelings come and go, and God is just as close when you feel nothing. Keep going, and be honest with Him.
Every Christian has dry seasons, and the Psalms are full of them: How long will You hide Your face from me? Feeling far from God is not being far from Him.
Sometimes there's a reason: unconfessed sin, exhaustion, too much screen time, depression, or autopilot. Sometimes there isn't, and God is growing a faith that doesn't depend on feelings.
Faith trusts God's promises instead of chasing a mood. We walk by faith, not by sight. Good marriages grow deep through ordinary days, and so does your relationship with God.
Tell God: I feel nothing. Keep reading, praying and meeting with Christians. Try something new: pray on a walk, read a psalm aloud, serve someone. If the flatness spreads into all of life, see a doctor.
My verses
How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs after You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God. When shall I come and appear in God’s presence? My tears have been my food both day and night, while men ask me all day long, “Where is your God?” These things come to mind as I pour out my soul: how I walked with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God with shouts of joy and praise. Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him for the salvation of His presence.
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”
