Bible verses for God feels far
When prayer feels empty
The lie
If I can't feel God, He isn't there, or He has left me.
The truth
God's presence isn't a feeling. It's a promise. He hasn't moved, even when you can't sense Him. A dry season is not a sign that He left. It's often where faith grows roots.
More truth
- Keep showing up. Feelings follow faithfulness, not the other way round.
- The Psalms give you words for this. Use them.
- Jesus cried "Why have You forsaken Me?" so that you would never be forsaken.
Pause
Stop. Breathe. Feeling far from God doesn't mean He has gone. Many of His people have felt this. Stay, and talk to Him honestly.
My verses
Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long must I wrestle in my soul, with sorrow in my heart each day? How long will my enemy dominate me?
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs after You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God. When shall I come and appear in God’s presence?
O God, You are my God. Earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You. My body yearns for You in a dry and weary land without water.
Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of His Servant? Who among you walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD; let him lean on his God.
The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.
The LORD is near to all who call on Him, to all who call out to Him in truth.
And teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary; His understanding is beyond searching out. He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak.
Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there.
Pray
God, I can't feel You. My prayers feel like they hit the ceiling. But You said You would never leave me, so I'm choosing to believe You over my feelings. Draw near to me. I'm not going anywhere. Amen.
Small steps for today
- Pray a Psalm out loud instead of your own words. Try Psalm 13.
- Tell God honestly how it feels. He can take it.
- Check the basics: sleep, stress, and anything you're hiding.
- Go to church and sing, even if you don't feel it.
- Ask an older believer how they got through a dry season.
If it's more than a dry season
If you've felt empty for weeks, can't get through the day, or are thinking about not wanting to be here, please talk to a real person now. That isn't a lack of faith.

Look underneath
Sometimes distance comes from sin you haven't confessed, from exhaustion or from grief. Sometimes it's simply a season. Either way, the way forward is the same: keep coming back.
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the way everlasting.
