Suffering, doubt and mental health
Is anxiety a sign I don't have enough faith?
Short answer
No. Anxiety is a common human struggle, not proof of weak faith. Faithful people in the Bible felt deep distress, and God met them there.
Some Christians are told that if they trusted God more, they wouldn't feel anxious. That adds guilt to suffering. A psalm says, “When anxiety overwhelms me, Your consolation delights my soul.” In Gethsemane Jesus' sweat was like drops of blood. Feeling anxious is not sinning.
Anxiety can come from stress, trauma, your body, brain chemistry or circumstances. Faith means bringing it to God and walking on.
Help includes prayer, Scripture, sleep, exercise and people, and can include a doctor, counsellor or medication. Using them is no more faithless than wearing glasses.
If anxiety stops you living normally, please see a doctor this week. When it hits, pray Psalm 94:19 slowly.
My verses
When anxiety overwhelms me, Your consolation delights my soul.
He took with Him Peter, James, and John, and began to be deeply troubled and distressed. Then He said to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch.”
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
