Suffering, doubt and mental health
Is it okay for a Christian to take medication or see a counsellor?
Short answer
Yes. Doctors, counsellors and medicine are part of how God cares for us. Using them is wisdom, not a lack of faith.
Luke, who wrote two New Testament books, was a doctor, and Paul called him dear. Paul told Timothy to take a little wine for his stomach. Scripture never says that using medicine means you don't trust God.
Your brain is part of your body. Treating it is like setting a broken arm: you pray, and you see the doctor. God can heal instantly, and He very often heals through people and time.
Look for a counsellor who respects your faith. A good one won't ask you to give up what you believe. Your church may know someone.
If you're struggling, book a doctor this week and say honestly how you are. That is brave and faithful.
My verses
Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas send you greetings.
Stop drinking only water and use a little wine instead, because of your stomach and your frequent ailments.
Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.
Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
