Soul
In plain words
The real you inside: your life, mind and heart, which lives on even after your body dies.
In everyday talk, soul can mean feelings or music. In the Bible it mostly means the whole living person, the real you. When God made the first human from dust and breathed into him, he became a living soul, a living being (Genesis 2:7). So you do not just have a soul. In a sense, you are one.
The Bible also uses soul for your inner self: the part that thinks, longs, feels sad and hopes in God (Psalm 42:11). And it teaches that this inner self does not stop when the body dies. Jesus said people can kill the body but cannot kill the soul (Matthew 10:28).

Jesus asks what good it is to gain the whole world and lose your soul (Mark 8:36). That means your inner life matters more than success, money or likes. Two misunderstandings are common: that the soul is a ghost trapped in a body, or that the body does not matter. God made both and will raise the body too. He wants you to love Him with all your heart, soul and mind (Matthew 22:37).

Hebrew nephesh means breath, life or living being, and can even mean appetite or throat. Greek psyche covers life and the inner self. Over the Bible the focus moves from the soul as the whole living person to the hope that the self is with Christ after death until the resurrection of the body. Christians differ on whether a person is body and soul, or body, soul and spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
My verses
Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?
Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
