Spirit, soul and body

In plain words

The Bible's way of describing you as a whole person: a body you can touch and an inner life.

You are more than a body, and more than your thoughts. God made you as one whole person. There is the part people can see and hug, and there is the inner you that thinks, feels, chooses and can know God. The Bible sometimes calls this inner part your soul, and sometimes your spirit. God cares about all of it, not just the religious bits.

Paul prays that God would keep a person's whole spirit, soul and body blameless (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Jesus says people can kill the body but not the soul (Matthew 10:28). One common mistake is to treat the body as bad and only the soul as spiritual. The Bible does not. Your sleep, food, rest and habits matter to God, and so do your thoughts, feelings and prayers.

This changes ordinary days. Looking after your body is not vanity, and caring for your inner life is not a luxury. When you feel low, the answer may be prayer, a walk, a meal, sleep or a friend, often several at once. God made all of you, and He is redeeming all of you.

The Old Testament word nephesh means a living being, a whole person with breath (Genesis 2:7). In the New Testament psyche usually means soul or life, and pneuma means spirit or breath. Hebrews 4:12 says God's word divides soul and spirit, which shows they can be spoken of separately, though the verse is about how deeply Scripture reaches.

Christians hold two main views. Many say a person is body and soul, with soul and spirit two names for the same inner life. Others say a person is body, soul and spirit, three distinct parts. Both agree you are a whole person made by God, your inner life continues after death, and your body will be raised (1 Corinthians 15:42-44). Your local church can walk you through how it teaches this.

My verses

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your entire spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.

So will it be with the resurrection of the dead: What is sown is perishable; it is raised imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
