Area of life
Marriage
Two people becoming one, with Jesus at the centre.
God might be speaking to you here if
- you talk about logistics but not about your hearts
- you keep score of who did what
- your eyes or thoughts drift to someone else
- you go to bed angry more often than not
What this is
Marriage is God's idea. He joins a man and a woman for life and makes them one, as a picture of how Christ loves His church.
Good marriages are made by two imperfect people who keep choosing each other, forgive quickly and keep talking. Small daily kindness matters more than big gestures.
Paul calls husbands and wives to love and serve each other as Christ loves His church (Ephesians 5:21-28). Christians differ on how headship and submission work out; ask your church how it reads these verses. But God's design never asks anyone to accept abuse. If you are being hurt or controlled, or you are afraid at home, get safe and talk to someone today.
My verses
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to Himself as a glorious church, without stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy and blameless. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs. Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
Marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed kept undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.
Husbands, in the same way, treat your wives with consideration as a delicate vessel, and with honor as fellow heirs of the gracious gift of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to help him up! Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one may be overpowered, two can resist. Moreover, a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Where to next
- Pray together for two minutesHold hands and each pray a sentence or two for the other, most nights this week. It feels awkward at first.
- Ask a real questionAsk once this week: What is weighing on you? Then listen without fixing or defending.
- Settle it before sleepIf something is wrong between you, say: I don't want this between us. Can we talk for ten minutes?
- Guard your eyes and phoneEnd any private chat or habit you wouldn't want your spouse to see. Faithfulness starts long before an affair.
- Plan one evening aloneBook a date, even a walk. Phones away. Enjoy each other, not the to-do list.
- Get help earlyStuck in the same fight for months? Talk to a pastor or Christian counsellor. Asking for help is wise.
What grows here
Pray
Lord, thank You for my spouse. Teach me to love like Jesus, to forgive quickly and to stay faithful in my eyes, words and heart. Make our home a place of peace.
