Bible verses for bitterness
When I can't let it go
The lie
If I forgive, they get away with it.
The truth
Forgiving isn't saying it didn't matter. It's handing the debt to God, who judges fairly, so it stops owning you.
More truth
- Forgiveness is a decision before it's a feeling.
- You can forgive and still keep a wise boundary.
- You've been forgiven far more. Start there.
Pause
Stop replaying it. Breathe. Holding on to it hurts you far more than it hurts them. You can hand this to God.
My verses
See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God, and that no root of bitterness springs up to cause trouble and defile many.
Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.
For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yours.
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.”
But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy-seven times!
Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God, and that no root of bitterness springs up to cause trouble and defile many.
And when you stand to pray, if you hold anything against another, forgive it, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your trespasses as well.
But Joseph replied, “Do not be afraid. Am I in the place of God? As for you, what you intended against me for evil, God intended for good, in order to accomplish a day like this—to preserve the lives of many people.

Bless those who persecute you. Bless and do not curse.
A man’s insight gives him patience, and his virtue is to overlook an offense.
Pray
Father, I'm still angry about what they did. I hand it to You. I choose to forgive them, even if I don't feel it yet. You see it all and You'll judge rightly. Heal the hurt and set me free from replaying it. Amen.
Your way out
- Say their name to God and say: I release them to You.
- Stop the replay: change what you're doing right now.
- Pray one blessing for them, even if it's hard.
- Don't vent about them to anyone today.
- Talk it through with someone wise, not someone who'll take sides.
Forgiveness isn't trust
If someone hurt or is hurting you, forgiving them doesn't mean staying in harm's way. If you're not safe, see Urgent help.
Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.”
