Sin and temptation
Is it a sin to be angry?
Short answer
Not always. Anger can be right when you see real evil. It becomes sin when it turns into rage, revenge, grudges or hurting people.
God gets angry at injustice, and Jesus was angry when religious leaders cared more about rules than a man who needed healing. Paul writes, “Be angry, yet do not sin. Do not let the sun set upon your anger.”
Anger turns into sin when it explodes in words that wound, simmers into bitterness, wants revenge, or is really about hurt pride.
Most of our anger is not holy. It's about being inconvenienced, ignored or embarrassed. Human anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires.
When it rises, stop, breathe and don't speak yet. Ask what you're really angry about and tell God. Then deal with it before the day ends.
My verses
“Be angry, yet do not sin.” Do not let the sun set upon your anger, and do not give the devil a foothold.
Jesus looked around at them with anger and sorrow at their hardness of heart. Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and it was restored.
My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires.
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.
