Short answer
You're not a failed parent. Notice your triggers, apologise to your kids when you blow it, and ask God to grow patience in you.
Almost every parent knows this. You're tired and rushed, it's the third time you've asked, and suddenly you're shouting. The guilt afterwards shows you care.
Look underneath. Anger often grows from exhaustion, stress, feeling disrespected or expecting too much. Paul says not to provoke your children, so they won't lose heart. Be quick to listen, slow to anger.
Know your danger times, like mornings and bedtime, and plan for them. When it rises, pause, lower your voice, step away. When you get it wrong, apologise plainly. That teaches your child grace better than perfection could.
If you have hurt your child, or fear you might, please talk to someone today: a doctor, a pastor or a parenting helpline. Getting help is brave.
My verses
Fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath; instead, bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they will not become discouraged.
My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires.
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
