What this is

Family is God's idea. At home we learn love up close, where nobody sees only our good side. How you treat your family shows what is really in your heart.

Honouring your parents is the first command with a promise. It doesn't mean agreeing with everything. It means respect, gratitude where you can, and not tearing them down.

Family is also where old hurts live. God asks you to forgive, make peace as far as it depends on you, and let Him heal what you can't fix. If someone at home hurts you, controls you or makes you afraid, get safe and tell someone you trust today.

My verses

Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
Exodus 20:12 (BSB)Read the whole chapter: Exodus 20

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (which is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on the earth.”

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity.

If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone.

God settles the lonely in families; He leads the prisoners out to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.

If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

As for you, what you intended against me for evil, God intended for good, in order to accomplish a day like this—to preserve the lives of many people.

Where to next

  1. Say sorry firstThink of a recent moment you were sharp or unfair at home. Say sorry this week, with no but.
  2. Thank a parent specificallyTell a parent one specific thing they did that helped you. If a parent hurts you, this step isn't for you: thank another safe adult instead.
  3. Pause before you reactWhen tension rises, take one slow breath and ask what you actually want to happen.
  4. Name the old hurtWrite down the hurt that keeps coming back. Tell God you want to forgive, even if you don't feel it yet.
  5. Make one callOnly if it's safe: call or visit the family member you've been avoiding. Keep it short and kind. You're only opening a door. Never someone who hurt you, controls you or frightens you: skip this step and talk to someone safe instead.

What grows here

Pray

Father, You know my family better than I do. Help me honour, forgive and love the people You put around me, and heal what I cannot fix. Show me one step I can take today.
