Fruit of the Spirit

Gentleness

Strength under control, used to build up and not crush.

What this is

Gentleness is strength under control: firm without being harsh, honest without being cruel, careful with people who are already hurting.

It takes more strength to answer softly than to shout. Gentleness still corrects, but in a way that restores rather than humiliates.

The Spirit grows gentleness as you see how gently God deals with you. Lower your voice, choose your words and remember that you need grace too.

In Jesus

Jesus called Himself gentle and humble in heart. Matthew quotes Isaiah: a bruised reed He will not break, and a smouldering wick He will not put out (Matthew 12:20).

My verses

Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:29 (BSB)Read the whole chapter: Matthew 11

Let your gentleness be apparent to all. The Lord is near.

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Brothers, if someone is caught in a trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him with a spirit of gentleness. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere.

And a servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome, but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, and forbearing. He must gently reprove those who oppose him, in the hope that God may grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth.

But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect.

Where to next

  1. Lower your voiceIn your next tense conversation, speak more quietly and slowly on purpose.
  2. Correct in privateIf you need to correct someone, do it one to one, never in front of others.
  3. Start with what is rightBefore you point out a problem, name one thing the person does well.
  4. Handle hurting people carefullyThink of someone having a hard time. Ask how you can help, and listen before advising.

Pray

Jesus, You are gentle and humble in heart. Make me strong enough to be gentle, careful with my words and kind to those who are hurting.
