Bible verses for pride
When I think I'm above it
The lie
I'm better than them, and I did this myself.
The truth
God resists the proud and pours grace on the humble. Humility doesn't mean putting yourself down. It means you stop needing to be the centre.
More truth
- You don't have to win this conversation.
- Everything good in you is a gift, not an achievement.
- The lower you go, the more grace you get.
Pause
Stop. Notice the voice that says you're better, smarter or more right than the person in front of you. Breathe. Everything you have, you were given.
My verses
But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think of yourself with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given you.
For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?
He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
I tell you, this man, rather than the Pharisee, went home justified. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.
Has not My hand made all these things? And so they came into being,” declares the LORD. “This is the one I will esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, who trembles at My word.
For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
But as for me, may I never boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
When pride comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom.
So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you.
Pray
Lord, I've been acting like I'm the centre of this. I'm not. Everything I have came from You. Take the pride out of me today. Help me listen more than I speak and serve without needing credit. Amen.
Your way out
- Ask one question instead of making your point.
- Say "You might be right" and mean it.
- Thank someone for something they did well.
- Do one job nobody will notice.
- Admit one thing you got wrong today.
Pride hides well
Pride often looks like being right, being busy or being the one who never needs help. Watch for it where you feel strongest.
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
