The daily walk

Bible, prayer and the Holy Spirit, one day at a time.

What this is

Following Jesus is a relationship, and it grows with time together. Jesus said, “Remain in Me, and I will remain in you” (John 15:4). God speaks mainly through the Bible, and you answer in prayer. The Spirit helps you, even when you don't know what to pray (Romans 8:26).

Start small. Read Mark, a chapter a day, then John, then the Psalms. That is milk, and every new believer needs it (1 Peter 2:2). But don't stay a baby: solid food is for those “who by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil” (Hebrews 5:14). Ask of every passage: What does this show me about God? About me? What will I do?

Prayer can be simple: thank God, praise Him, confess your sin, ask for what you and others need. Then be quiet for a moment. Carry one verse through the day. “Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25).

God also made you to rest. One day a week, stop working, enjoy His gifts and remember you're not holding the world together (Mark 2:27).

Hold on to this

But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither, and who prospers in all he does.
Psalm 1:2-3 (BSB)Read the whole chapter: Psalm 1
Read slowly: Jesus teaches us to prayMatthew 6:5-15

5And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward. 6But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not babble on like pagans, for they think that by their many words they will be heard. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. 9So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. 10Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11Give us this day our daily bread. 12And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ 14For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yours.

But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and slipped out to a solitary place to pray.

But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit.

Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

Where to next

  1. Start Mark this weekRead a chapter of Mark a day, same time and place, for example with your first coffee.Read Mark 1
  2. Pray the Lord's Prayer slowlyPut each line of Matthew 6:9-13 in your own words. It takes five minutes.Read Matthew 6:9-13
  3. Keep a short prayer listWrite down five people and five needs. Pray for them this week and note God's answers.
  4. Carry one verse with youPick one verse from your reading and return to it at lunch and before bed.Do it in Levo
  5. Plan one day of restPick a day with no work and no catching up. Go to church, eat with people, walk, sleep.

Watch out: All or nothing

Many people plan an hour a day, miss two days and quit. Ten honest minutes daily do more. Missed a day? Start again tomorrow.

Pray

Father, I want to know You, not only know about You. Open my eyes as I read Your word, teach me to pray, and fill me with Your Spirit. Help me rest in You instead of running on my own strength.
