Prayer and hearing God

How does God speak to me?

Short answer

God speaks mainly through the Bible. He also uses the Holy Spirit, other Christians, your conscience and circumstances, always in line with Scripture.

Most Christians never hear an audible voice. God speaks mainly through His word, which is living and active. When a verse hits you right where you are, that is God speaking.

The Spirit also guides from inside: a nudge to call someone, a check in your conscience, peace or unease about a decision. Elijah heard God in a quiet whisper. Jesus said His sheep know His voice, and you learn to recognise it over time.

Test what you think you hear. God never contradicts the Bible or speaks in ways that feed pride or fear. Wise Christians can help you tell the difference.

After you read, be quiet for two minutes. Ask: Lord, what do You want me to see? Write down what comes, and check it against Scripture.

My verses

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.

Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD. Behold, the LORD is about to pass by.” And a great and mighty wind tore into the mountains and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a still, small voice.

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.
