Conscience

In plain words

Your conscience is the inner sense God gave you that tells you what is right and wrong.

You know the feeling when you have done something wrong and something inside you will not let it go. That is your conscience. It is like a warning light on a car dashboard. It does not fix the problem, but it tells you something needs attention.

The Bible says even people who have never read it have this inner sense of right and wrong (Romans 2:14-15). It is one way God speaks to every person. Ignoring it again and again makes it quieter, which is dangerous. Listening to it keeps it clear.

Paul worked hard to keep "a clear conscience before God and man" (Acts 24:16). That did not mean he never sinned. It meant he did not leave things unresolved. When your conscience accuses you, bring it to God, confess, and if needed make things right with people.

Your conscience can also be wrong. It can be too harsh, accusing you of things God has forgiven, or too weak, having been ignored for years. That is why it needs the Bible to train it. The blood of Christ cleanses the conscience (Hebrews 9:14). Forgiven guilt does not need to be carried again.

The Greek syneidesis means knowing with, a shared inner knowledge. It is rare in the Old Testament, where the heart does similar work, but Paul uses it often. He speaks of a good, a weak, a defiled and a seared conscience, so the conscience can be healthy or damaged.

Paul's goal is "the love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a sincere faith" (1 Timothy 1:5). In debatable matters he says not to push others to act against their conscience. Christians differ on many such matters, which is why Paul asks for patience with each other rather than pressure.

My verses

Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. So they show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts either accusing or defending them

In this hope, I strive always to maintain a clear conscience before God and man.

How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God, purify our consciences from works of death, so that we may serve the living God!

The goal of our instruction is the love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a sincere faith.
