Holy Spirit

In plain words

God Himself, present with and inside everyone who trusts Jesus, helping them know Him and change.

The Holy Spirit is not a ghost and not a vague energy. The Bible speaks of Him as a person who is God. Jesus promised that after He went back to the Father, the Spirit would come and live in His followers (John 14:16-17). Think of a good coach who does not only shout from the sideline but stands next to you, reminds you of what matters, and gives you strength to keep going.

Go further Growing

The Spirit leads you into truth (John 16:13), assures you that you are God's child (Romans 8:16), and slowly grows love, joy, peace and patience in you (Galatians 5:22-23). He also gives power to speak about Jesus (Acts 1:8). A common misunderstanding is that the Spirit is only about dramatic experiences. Most of His work is quiet: a growing desire for God and real change over time.

Go deeper Going deeper

Hebrew ruach and Greek pneuma both mean wind, breath and spirit. In the Old Testament the Spirit comes on certain people for certain tasks. The prophets promised a day when God would put His Spirit within His people, and at Pentecost this happened for all who believe. Christians differ on whether gifts like tongues and prophecy continue today in the same way, so ask how your local church understands this.

My verses

And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.

However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.

The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
