Growing

Born again

In plain words

Being born again means God gives you a new life on the inside when you trust Jesus.

Jesus once told a respected religious teacher that he needed to be "born again" (John 3:3). The man was confused. How can an adult go back into his mother? Jesus meant something else: a second birth that God does in a person's heart, not a second birth of the body.

Think of it like this: you did not choose your first birth or work for it. It happened to you. The new birth is similar. God's Spirit makes you alive toward Him. You start to want God, to understand the Bible and to hate what hurts others.

Go further Growing

Being born again is not a personality type or a loud kind of Christian. It is simply what happens to every real believer. Jesus said it is the Spirit who does it, like the wind you cannot see but whose effects you notice (John 3:5-8). Peter says it happens through the living word of God (1 Peter 1:23).

A common misunderstanding is that new birth means you will never struggle again. You will. A newborn is fully alive but still has to grow, and Peter tells new believers to "crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation" (1 Peter 2:2). New birth gives you new desires and a new direction. It means you can take real steps against sin, because you are no longer the old person living for yourself.

Go deeper Going deeper

John uses gennao anothen, which means both "born again" and "born from above", and Jesus seems to play on both. Paul speaks of palingenesia, renewal or rebirth by the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5). The Old Testament had promised a new heart and a new spirit, and the New Testament presents new birth as that promise coming true.

Christians differ on the order of things: some teach that new birth comes before faith and makes faith possible, others that God gives new birth in response to faith, and some link it closely to baptism. All agree it is God's work, received by faith, and that it really changes a person.

My verses

Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit. Do not be amazed that I said, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes. You hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
