Growing
Fruit of the Spirit
In plain words
The fruit of the Spirit is the character God grows in you: love, joy, peace, patience and more.
Paul lists nine qualities that grow in a person when God's Spirit lives in them: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23). He calls them fruit, not fruits, because they belong together as one character. They are not a checklist.
Fruit is a good picture. An apple tree does not strain to make apples. It grows them when it is healthy and connected to its roots. In the same way, these qualities grow when you stay connected to Jesus (John 15:5). You cannot force them, but you can stay close.

Gifts and fruit are different. Gifts are what you do for others; fruit is who you become. Someone can have impressive gifts and little fruit. Jesus said a tree is known by its fruit, so character is the real test of spiritual health.
A common misunderstanding is that fruit comes automatically or that you should fake it. Neither. Fruit grows as you "walk in step with the Spirit" (Galatians 5:25): spending time with Jesus, obeying in small things, and letting Him work through hard situations. Patience grows when you are asked to wait.

The Greek karpos is singular in Galatians 5:22. The list stands in contrast to the "works of the flesh" just before it: works are produced, fruit is grown. Each quality reflects the character of God Himself, and all of them are seen fully in the life of Jesus.
The image of fruit goes back to Israel as God's vineyard, which was meant to produce justice and righteousness. Jesus calls Himself the true vine and His followers the branches. Christians use different practices to grow this fruit, but all agree that it is the Spirit's work in a willing heart.
My verses
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.
Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit.
