Growing
Sanctification
In plain words
Sanctification is the lifelong process where God makes you more like Jesus, step by step.
When someone becomes a Christian, God forgives them completely. But their habits, reactions and ways of thinking do not change overnight. Sanctification is the word for that slow change. It is a bit like learning a language: you belong in the class from day one, and you get better with practice.
The good news is that you are not doing it alone. God is at work inside you. Over time you notice you are a little more patient, a little more honest, a little less driven by fear. That is sanctification, and it keeps going for the rest of your life.
Go further Growing
Paul writes: "continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who works in you to will and to act" (Philippians 2:12-13). Both are true at once. God gives the power and the desire. You take real steps: you pray, read, confess, avoid what drags you down and serve others. Growth is slow, but it is real (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Two mistakes are common. One is thinking God loves you more as you improve. He does not: your standing is settled by justification, and sanctification is the change that follows. The other is thinking growth is optional. Hebrews says to pursue holiness, "without which no one will see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14). When you fall, don't despair. Get up, confess, and keep walking.
Go deeper Going deeper
The Greek hagiasmos comes from hagios, holy, set apart. The New Testament uses it in two ways: a once-for-all setting apart when you come to Christ (Hebrews 10:14), and an ongoing growth in holiness (1 Thessalonians 4:3). Both rest on the work of Christ and are carried out by the Holy Spirit.
Christians differ on how far growth can go in this life: some traditions teach that a believer can reach a settled state of entire sanctification, others that the struggle continues until we see Jesus. All agree that real change is possible and expected, and that it is finished only at glorification.
My verses
For it is God’s will that you should be holy: You must abstain from sexual immorality.
Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now even more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who works in you to will and to act on behalf of His good purpose.
And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
Because by a single offering He has made perfect for all time those who are being sanctified.
