Season
Big change
A new job, a move, a lost role: God goes with you.
What this is
A new job, a move, a baby, retirement, a breakup, an empty nest, a lost role. Big changes shake things you didn't know you were leaning on.
When everything shifts, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and for ever (Hebrews 13:8). Your identity is in Him, not your job or title.
Change is also a chance to build new rhythms of Bible, prayer and rest. Abraham left everything familiar, not knowing where he was going, and found God faithful (Hebrews 11:8).
If you've moved, find a church in the first month. If you've lost a role, grieve and ask God what faithfulness looks like now. He still has good works for you (Ephesians 2:10).
Hold on to this
Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
Read slowly: He watches over youPsalm 121:1-8
1I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? 2My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber. 4Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is the shade on your right hand. 6The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. 7The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul. 8The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, without knowing where he was going.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.
The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul. The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.
Where to next
- Find a church in month oneIf you've moved, visit a Bible-teaching church in your first two weeks and choose one by month's end.
- Set your rhythms earlyDecide where and when you'll read and pray in the new routine, before old habits vanish.
- Grieve what you lostChange brings loss, even when it's good. Tell God what you miss.
- Ask what God has herePray: Lord, who can I love and serve here? Write down one name and do something kind for them this week.
- Keep old friends closeCall a Christian friend from your old season and ask them to pray for you.
Watch out: Losing the basics
In big change, faith often slips quietly. Months later you realise you haven't prayed or been to church. Protect the basics first.
Pray
Lord, so much is changing and I feel unsettled. You don't change. Be my rock in this new season, show me where I belong, and help me see who You want me to serve here.
