Being saved
What does it actually mean to repent?
Short answer
To repent is to turn around: agree with God that something is wrong, and turn from it to Him. It's more than feeling bad.
The New Testament word means a change of mind that leads to a change of direction. You turn around and walk towards God.
You can feel terrible and change nothing. Paul describes worldly sorrow, which leads to death, and godly sorrow, which leads to repentance and salvation without regret. Real repentance is hopeful, because you turn towards someone who runs to meet you, like the father of the lost son.
Name the sin honestly and confess it to God. Make things right with anyone you hurt, like Zacchaeus paying back what he stole. Change something concrete, like deleting an app. Then accept that you are forgiven and move on.
Repentance shapes the whole Christian life: turning back to Jesus, again and again.

Make me like one of your hired servants.”’ So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, half of my possessions I give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will repay it fourfold.” Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham.
