Seeking

You're asking whether God is real and who Jesus is.

You're probably here if

What this is

Maybe you're not sure God exists, or you don't know what to make of Jesus. That's a fine place to start. Honest questions are welcome here.

Jesus never asked people to switch off their minds. When two men started following Him, He asked what they were looking for and said: come and see (John 1:38-39).

At the centre of Christianity is a person: Jesus, who claimed to be God's Son, died on a cross and, His followers say, rose from the dead. If that is true, it changes everything. If not, Christianity falls apart (1 Corinthians 15:14).

You don't need it all worked out first. God is not far from any of us, and He made us to seek Him and find Him (Acts 17:27).

Hold on to this

But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.
John 20:31 (BSB)Read the whole chapter: John 20
Read slowly: Come and seeJohn 1:35-51

35The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” 37And when the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you want?” He asked. They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are You staying?” 39“Come and see,” He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and spent that day with Him. It was about the tenth hour. 40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John’s testimony and followed Jesus. 41He first found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated as Christ). 42Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated as Peter). 43The next day Jesus decided to set out for Galilee. Finding Philip, He told him, “Follow Me.” 44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the same town as Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law, the One the prophets foretold—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46“Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. 47When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, He said of him, “Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is no deceit.” 48“How do You know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” 49“Rabbi,” Nathanael answered, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50Jesus said to him, “Do you believe just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” 51Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you want?” He asked. They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are You staying?” “Come and see,” He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and spent that day with Him. It was about the tenth hour.

From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands. God intended that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is worthless, and so is your faith.

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

Where to next

  1. Read Mark's gospelIt's the shortest account of Jesus' life. Read a chapter a day and note what surprises you.Read Mark 1
  2. Write down your real questionsList what stops you believing. Check the questions section, or ask a Christian you trust.Browse the questions
  3. Pray honestly, even if unsureYou can say: God, if You're there, show me. That is a real prayer.
  4. Ask a Christian whyTake a friend who follows Jesus for coffee. Ask why they believe.
  5. Visit one church serviceSit at the back and listen. You don't have to sing, give or sign anything.

Watch out: Waiting for certainty

Some people wait for every answer before they look at Jesus. Start with Him and bring your questions along.

Pray

God, I don't know if You're there. If You are, I want to know You. Show me who Jesus really is, and give me the courage to follow the truth wherever it leads.
