God

In plain words

The one Creator of everything, who is personal, good and holy, and who wants you to know Him.

When the Bible says God, it does not mean a force, a feeling or a distant idea. It means the one who made everything and keeps it going, and who thinks, speaks, loves and acts. Picture an author who is not a character in his story but still cares about every person in it. God is not part of the universe. He made it, and He cares about the people in it, including you.

The Bible never starts by proving God. It simply begins with Him (Genesis 1:1) and then shows who He is by what He does. When God describes Himself to Moses, the first words are compassion, grace, patience and faithful love (Exodus 34:6). Many people picture God either as a harsh judge or as a soft grandfather. He is fully holy and fully loving at once, and you see both most clearly in Jesus.

Go deeper Going deeper

The Old Testament uses Elohim for God and the personal name YHWH, usually printed LORD, which God reveals to Moses at the burning bush. The New Testament uses the Greek theos. Across the Bible the one God is slowly revealed as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, which the church later summed up as the Trinity. Christians agree on this, though they differ on how much can be known about God from nature alone, without Scripture.

My verses

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Then the LORD passed in front of Moses and called out: “The LORD, the LORD God, is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness.

Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God.

The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples made by human hands. Nor is He served by human hands, as if He needed anything, because He Himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands. God intended that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. ‘For in Him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are His offspring.’

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
