Assurance

In plain words

Knowing with quiet confidence that you belong to God, because of what Jesus has done.

Many people wonder: am I really saved, or have I done too much wrong? God does not want you to live guessing. John wrote his letter so that people who believe in Jesus may know they have eternal life (1 John 5:13). Your confidence does not rest on how strong your faith feels today. It rests on Jesus, who holds you.

Jesus says no one can snatch His sheep out of His hand (John 10:27-29). Paul says nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ (Romans 8:38-39). The Spirit Himself tells our spirit that we are God's children (Romans 8:16). Assurance is not pride. It is resting on God's promise.

If doubts come, start with Jesus, not with yourself. Ask: do I trust Him, and do I want to follow Him? Then look for signs of His work: a new hatred of sin, love for His people, a hunger for His word. John says, "By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments" (1 John 2:3). God who began a good work in you will finish it (Philippians 1:6). Talk to a mature Christian if the fear stays.

The Greek plerophoria means full confidence, and Hebrews urges believers to hold it. Historic Protestant teaching says assurance rests mainly on God's promises in the gospel, is confirmed by the Spirit's witness and by a changed life, and can be weakened in hard seasons without salvation being lost.

Christians differ on whether a true believer can finally fall away. Reformed Christians teach that God keeps every true believer to the end. Arminian and some other Christians teach that a person can turn away from faith. Both say Christ is faithful, perseverance matters, and a person who trusts Christ can rest in His love. Your local church can help you with how it teaches this.

My verses

I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
