God and Jesus

What is the Trinity? How can God be three and one?

Short answer

There is one God who exists eternally as three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Not three gods, and not one God wearing three masks.

The word Trinity isn't in the Bible, but the teaching runs through it. There is one God, yet the Bible calls the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit God, and the Spirit is a person who speaks and can be grieved. At Jesus' baptism all three appear at once.

Every picture falls short. Water as ice, liquid and steam suggests one God switching forms, which the Bible doesn't teach. We can know God truly without knowing Him completely.

God was never lonely. Before anything existed, Father, Son and Spirit loved each other, and you are invited into that love. We baptise in the one name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

When you pray, thank the Father, come to Him through the Son, and ask the Spirit for help.

My verses

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One.

As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!”

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.
