What does the Bible say about gaming and social media?

Short answer

It doesn't mention them, but its wisdom fits: enjoy good things, guard your mind, use your time well, and don't let anything master you.

Games and social media aren't evil. You can connect, rest, create and learn. But many are built to hook you, and they quietly shape your heart.

Everything is permissible, Paul says, but not everything is beneficial, and I will not be mastered by anything. Ask: Does this control me? Does it make me anxious, jealous or angry? Is it stealing time from sleep, people, study or God?

Philippians 4:8 is a good filter: whatever is true, honourable, right, pure, lovely and admirable, think on these things.

Set your limits before you start, not three hours in. Keep your phone out of the bedroom at night. Turn off notifications you don't need. Try one screen-free day a week.

My verses

“Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be mastered by anything.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things.

Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

I will set no worthless thing before my eyes. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.
