Is it okay for a Christian to drink alcohol?

Short answer

The Bible doesn't forbid drinking, but it clearly forbids drunkenness. Keep the law, think of others and be honest about your own heart.

Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding, and a psalm calls wine a gift that gladdens the heart. For adults, drinking itself is not a sin.

But the Bible is clear about drunkenness. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion; be filled with the Spirit. Whoever is led astray by drink is not wise.

Ask: Am I old enough? Do I control it, or does it control me? Am I drinking to escape? Could it make someone stumble, like a friend who struggles with alcohol? Choosing not to drink at all is a good choice too.

If you can't stop, or you drink to cope, talk to someone and get help. That is strength.

My verses

And the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not know where it was from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone serves the fine wine first, and then the cheap wine after the guests are drunk. But you have saved the fine wine until now!”

He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops for man to cultivate, bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil that makes his face to shine, and bread that sustains his heart.

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything to cause your brother to stumble.
