Church

Why are there so many different churches and denominations?

Short answer

Christians agree on the core of the faith but differ on secondary questions, history and style. It's messy, but less divided than it looks.

Denominations formed over centuries: the East-West split of 1054, the Reformation in the 1500s, and later disputes over baptism, leadership, gifts and worship. Some divisions came from courage, some from pride.

Bible-believing churches agree on the big things: one God in three persons, Jesus fully God and fully human, His death for our sin and bodily resurrection, salvation by grace through faith, and His return, as the Apostles' Creed sums up.

Jesus prayed that His followers would be one, so division should make us sad. But unity doesn't mean everyone does church the same way.

Find a church that is solid on the core, and treat Christians in other churches as family.

My verses

I am not asking on behalf of them alone, but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their message, that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

And with diligence to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree together, so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be united in mind and conviction.

Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on his opinions.
