Discipleship

In plain words

Discipleship means learning from Jesus and following Him in everyday life, not just believing facts about Him.

A disciple is a student or apprentice. In Jesus' day, a disciple did not just attend lectures. They walked with their teacher, watched how he lived and copied him. Jesus' first followers left their fishing nets to come with Him.

Today, being a disciple means the same thing: you learn from Jesus through the Bible, prayer and other Christians, and you try to live the way He lived. It is less like taking a class and more like learning a trade from a master.

Jesus said that a disciple must deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow Him (Luke 9:23). That sounds heavy, and it is costly (Luke 14:27). But it also leads to freedom. Jesus said if you hold to His teaching, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:31-32).

A common mistake is to see discipleship as an advanced course for keen Christians. In the New Testament every Christian is a disciple, and disciples bear fruit: "This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, proving yourselves to be My disciples" (John 15:8). Another mistake is doing it alone. Jesus made disciples in a group. Find one or two people who are further along and ask them to read the Bible with you.

The Greek mathetes means learner. The word appears over two hundred times in the Gospels and Acts, far more than Christian. Jesus' last command was to "make disciples of all nations", baptising and teaching them to obey everything He commanded (Matthew 28:19-20). The goal is obedience, not only information.

Discipleship follows the old pattern of rabbi and student, but Jesus is a different kind of teacher: He calls people to follow Him as Lord, not just His ideas. Churches differ in methods, such as small groups, mentoring or catechism classes, but agree that disciples are made through relationships, the word and the Spirit.

My verses

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

Then Jesus said to all of them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.

So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

And whoever does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.
