Sex, dating and family

Can I date someone who isn't a Christian?

Short answer

The Bible says to marry another believer, so it's wise not to start dating someone who doesn't share your faith.

Paul says a believer is free to marry, but only in the Lord, and warns against being yoked with unbelievers, like two oxen pulling different ways. Dating usually leads to marriage, so decide early.

This isn't about being better. If Jesus is at the centre for you and not for them, you will keep pulling apart: on time, money, sex, children and what you live for.

Dating someone in the hope they'll become a Christian rarely works, and more often pulls the Christian away. If they're interested in Jesus, let them come for His sake.

If you're already there, pray honestly, talk to a mature Christian, and be willing to obey even if it hurts.

My verses

A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, as long as he belongs to the Lord.

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership can righteousness have with wickedness? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness?

Can two walk together without agreeing where to go?

Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.
