Bible verses for grief
When I've lost someone or something
The lie
If I really trusted God, I wouldn't hurt this much.
The truth
Grief is the cost of love. It isn't weak faith. Jesus wept at His friend's grave, knowing He would raise him. You can grieve and still hope.
More truth
- There's no timetable for this.
- God keeps your tears. None of them is wasted.
- Death doesn't get the last word. Jesus does.
Pause
Stop. Breathe. You don't need to be strong right now. Jesus wept too. Let yourself be sad in His presence.
My verses
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.
When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you put him?” He asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they answered. Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”
‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.
Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. Surely He took on our infirmities and carried our sorrows; yet we considered Him stricken by God, struck down and afflicted.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
You have taken account of my wanderings. Put my tears in Your bottle— are they not in Your book?
I consider that our present sufferings are not comparable to the glory that will be revealed in us.
Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well. In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.
Pray
Lord, it hurts. I miss what I've lost and I don't understand all of it. Be close to me. Hold me when I can't hold on. Give me strength for today, and keep hope alive in me. Amen.
Small steps for today
- Let yourself cry. It isn't weakness.
- Tell one person you're having a hard day.
- Eat something and drink some water.
- Write down one memory you're thankful for.
- Read Psalm 23 slowly, out loud.

Don't carry it alone
Grief can last a long time and come in waves. A grief group, your pastor or a counsellor can walk with you. If it isn't easing after many months, see your GP as well.
Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
