Why should I get baptised?

Short answer

Because Jesus told us to. Baptism is His command and His gift, and it marks you publicly as belonging to Him.

Baptism is Jesus' command and His gift. He told His followers to make disciples and baptise them, and in Acts people who came to faith were baptised, often the same day.

Paul connects baptism with being buried with Christ and raised to new life. Christians differ on what God does in it, a sign of faith or a means of grace, and on how much water is used. Your church will explain its view. Either way, baptism says: I belong to Jesus.

Some put it off because they don't feel ready or good enough. Nobody is. Baptism isn't a reward for strong Christians. It is a step of obedience for new ones.

Talk to a pastor at your church about baptism. If you were baptised as a baby, ask how your church sees that.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

Or aren’t you aware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life.

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise belongs to you and your children and to all who are far off—to all whom the Lord our God will call to Himself.” With many other words he testified, and he urged them, “Be saved from this corrupt generation.” Those who embraced his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to the believers that day.

As they traveled along the road and came to some water, the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is there to prevent me from being baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.
