When you want to escape or take the edge off
The lie
I need this to cope, and I can stop whenever I want.
The truth
Getting high or vaping to cope gives you a few minutes of escape, then asks for more. It can't carry what you're carrying. Jesus can. Your body belongs to Him, and He wants you free, clear-headed and alive.
More truth
- What you run to for relief will start to run you.
- A craving lies about how long it will last. It passes.
- Asking for help is strength, not failure.
Pause
Stop. Breathe slowly. Ask: what am I trying to get away from right now? Tell God before you do anything else.
My verses
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.
Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
“Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be mastered by anything.
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery.
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves to depravity. For a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.
Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.
Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires. Do not present the parts of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and present the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to everyone. It instructs us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live sensible, upright, and godly lives in the present age.
I sought the LORD, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to Him are radiant with joy; their faces shall never be ashamed. This poor man called out, and the LORD heard him; He saved him from all his troubles.
You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You.
Pray
Jesus, I want to escape again. You know what I'm running from. I'm bringing it to You instead. Give me strength to say no right now, and the courage to get the help I need. My body is Yours. Set me free. Amen.
Your way out
- Throw it out or put it out of reach, now.
- Leave the place or the people where it's happening.
- Text your trusted person.
- Breathe slowly for two minutes: in for four, out for six.
- Drink some water, eat something and go for a walk.
Get real help
If you can't stop, you need more to get the same feeling, or it's hurting your health, school, work or family, that is addiction, and it can be treated. You don't have to beat it on willpower. Help is part of the fight

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to help him up!
